I believe that our universe reflects the awesome nature of our God; from the amazing intricacies of the atom and the single cell to the wonder of the galaxies above. Mankind has sought to dig deeper, to see closer and to travel further at every available opportunity and at almost limitless cost. Those who have done so are called explorers; men and woman who are passionate about the natural world around them and who have an unquenchable thirst for more.
Similarly, I believe that that the Bible is the most exciting book ever written; filled with adventure and discovery that has no bounds. The more we learn about the Word of God, the more there is to learn. God’s Word is like the universe that seems to have no end; the further we look into space, the more wonders we discover.
When we watch TV and we see documentaries about exciting explorations, we tend to be shown only the end result – the reward. We don’t see the years of hard work and preparation or the expense of the endeavour. Isaac Newton studied for many years before making the discoveries in physics that he is so famous for; the Wright brothers, Orville and Wilber, made many attempts before they finally succeeded in their quest to fly an aeroplane; it took many Apollo missions before man finally walked on the moon. But in each case, the effort was truly worth it.
What we need to teach children is that the Word of God has limitless exciting discoveries within it, but we must be prepared to be committed and passionate about it if we, like real explorers, are ever to uncover its riches. That is what Explorers youth is all about.
The group is for kids between the ages of 9 and 13; an age group that is still open to the things of God and the idea of exploration. Explorers meets every Friday at our house (41 Cherwell Avenue, Kidlington) at 7pm until 9pm.
